RENOUNCING COLOMBIAN CITIZENSHIP

What is the procedure for renouncing Colombian Citizenship?

According to Law 43 of 1993, regulated by Decree 1869 of 1994 and amended by Law 962 of 2005, Colombian citizens shall have the right to renounce their nationality. To this end, the individual must file a written request before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Colombian Consulates abroad. Upon compliance with all the requirements and submission of the documents set forth in current legislation in force, a "renunciation certificate" shall be issued, certifying that a Colombian national has renounced his/her Colombian citizenship.

Requirements and Documentation

1.    Written statement indicating that the citizen is willing to renounce the Colombian nationality. It must also contain the person’s full name, Colombian identity card number, Colombian passport (if any) and the other nationality.

2.    Five (5) recent and identical photographs, size 4 x 5 centimeters.

3.    Valid Colombian I. D. Card and valid Colombian Passport (if any), or a true copy of the Colombian birth certificate for minors.

4.    Suitable document which shows that the citizen is the holder of another nationality or is applying for it.

5.    Valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the competent authority of the country of residence for Colombians residing abroad.

6.    Identification documents of the parents or suitable document issued by the competent Colombian authorities proving parental authority over the minor. The request must be made either by both parents or by the parent with parental authority. If the petitioner holds parental authority, this must be accredited as well.

7.    The person shall appear for notification of the Colombian Nationality Renunciation Certificate, prior summons issued by the Internal Working Group on Nationality from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or by the relevant Consulate.

Note: Article 111 of Decree 2150 of 1995, which amends Article 36 of Law 48 of 1993, whereby unnecessary regulations, procedures or processes of the public administration are eliminated and reformed, provides that Colombians up to the age of 50 must have defined their military status.
