NATIONALITY

Dual or Multiple Nationality

Colombian nationality is not lost when the citizen acquires another nationality (Article 96 of the Political Constitution, and Article 22 of Law 43, 1993).

Nationals by birth acquiring other nationality shall not lose their civil and political rights recognized by the Constitution and Colombian Law.

Access to public positions on the part of nationals by adoption holding another nationality may be limited by the provisions of the Constitution and the Law.

The Colombian citizen holder of another nationality shall be subject to the Political Constitution and the Laws of the Republic within the country. Therefore, their entry and stay in the territory, as well as their departure, shall always be subject to their status as Colombians, identifying themselves as such in all their civil and political actions.

Colombians by birth shall not lose their nationality.

IMPORTANT: There are countries which do not allow more than one nationality; therefore it is the responsibility of the user to verify such restrictions when obtaining a nationality other than the Colombian nationality or when renouncing or recovering the Colombian nationality, in order to avoid being considered “stateless” (a situation whereby a person is not considered a national of any State, according to its legislation).
